Some words by Jonathan on the motive: “The image is of the American actor Ed Bishop in a tv series called UFO. It was shown in the UK in the 70’s I think the book in the piece is a UFO anual, the kind of show merchandise kids might buy back then. The other book is a time life book on cellular biology. The title of the books were consciously hidden, I wanted the viewer to try and contemplate why this ‘futuristic’ looking man was peering into a crystal ball. The image of the cells formally mirror the ball and perhaps those are the kinds of things he’s looking for. For answers. And then of course the books are being eaten and blown apart, in all of that series there is an explosive evisceration of the books themselves. A recurring obsession is to see if the book will retain a structure that corresponds somehow to the original when passed through what might be the equivalent of a grinder. Piles of rubble are never anonymous.”
